WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD) in reintroducing legislation to abolish the federal Estate Tax and cut red tape that is imposing increased restrictions on working families. The senators previously introduced this legislation in 2021.
“The Death Tax destroys American jobs by stifling profitable businesses that employ hardworking Americans,” said Senator Tuberville. “Our government should be focused on creating an economic environment that preserves small businesses and family farms, instead of taxing them out of operation. I will keep pushing for policies that incentivize our next generation of farmers and business owners, so that we can continue to rely on their contributions for a strong economy.”
Alabama Farmers Federation President Jimmy Parnell also voiced his support of the legislation:
“Farming is a capital-intensive business with many of the assets such as land and equipment tied to the operation of the farm. Without cash on hand, a family could be forced to sell these assets just to pay the tax burden, jeopardizing the viability of the farm. We need tax policies that encourage profitability of current farmers and the next generation of farmers, and repealing the estate tax is a huge step in the right direction.”
As Alabama’s voice on the Senate AG Committee, Senator Tuberville is committed to strengthening rural and farming communities, with 55 of Alabama’s 67 counties being classified as rural. He has spoken about the importance of preserving family farms in Senate AG hearings and shared concerns about how proposed tax hikes would impact family farms with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
Also joining Senators Tuberville and Thune in introducing legislation to repeal the Estate Tax are U.S. Senators John Barrasso (R-WY), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), John Boozman (R-AR), Mike Braun (R-IN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Ted Budd (R-NC), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Cornyn (R-TX), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Lindsay Graham (R-SC), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), John Hoeven (R-ND), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Kennedy (R-LA), James Lankford (R-OK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Jim Risch (R-ID), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Tim Scott (R-SC), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
