WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Richard Shelby (R-AL) today will introduce legislation to extend the authorization of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area (MSNHA). The MSNHA was first established by Congress in 2009, and it is set to expire in 2024. This reauthorization bill would extend the programs and funding eligibility for the MSNHA another 15 years.
“Northwest Alabama holds great cultural and historical significance for both our state and country,” said Senator Tuberville. “I am proud to introduce legislation that reauthorizes the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and ensures we preserve our history for generations to come.”
“The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area promotes a wide variety of rich traditions in northwest Alabama,” said Senator Shelby. “From the Tennessee River to Fame Recording Studio, the landmarks and historic culture of these counties should be preserved. I am pleased to introduce this reauthorization bill with Senator Tuberville to help maintain this designation.”
The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area includes the following counties: Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone and Morgan. It is currently the only National Heritage Area (NHA) in the state, and partners with the University of North Alabama. NHAs are partnerships between the National Park Service, state, and local entities to protect and support conservation and public access. These private-public partnerships create a diverse, community-driven approach to increase heritage conservation, economic development, recreation, and tourism.
