WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) today questioned U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor nominee Julie Su on her strategy for prioritizing workforce development and filling skills-based gaps in the labor market. TUBERVILLE: “Would you promise when confirmed -and if confirmed- that you will work with workforce development across this country to get young kids ready to work? Most kids don’t need to go to a four-year school. They need to go and learn how to use their hands, and we desperately need somebody in the Labor Department that will stress workforce development on kids that don’t want to go to college, but learn a skill. I think that’s going to be very important in the next 10 years after coming out of this pandemic.”
SU: “I would absolutely do that, Senator, and look forward to working with you on it. I know from your state and others as I mentioned earlier, there are innovations and effective programs in place that we should look to build on and expand and possibly model. Absolutely, I think that everything that you’ve said there is important and would be a priority for me.”
